WASHINGTON − President Donald Trump threatened Iran's supreme leader with assassination as he pushed Tehran to give up its nuclear enrichment program and air strikes continued over Iran and Israel.

President Trump left the Group of Seven summit in Canada a day early to deal with the conflict between Israel and Iran.

On June 15, Trump rejected an Israeli plan to kill Ali Khamenei, a senior U.S. official told USA TODAY. The U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks, confirmed that Israel was presented with an opportunity to kill Khamenei but Trump objected to the plan and steered it off.

Israel appeared to be expanding its air campaign against Tehran five days after its surprise attack on Iran’s military and nuclear program, as U.S. President Donald Trump posted an ominous message warning residents of the capital to evacuate.

"We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran," Trump posted on Tuesday, making clear the U.S. and Israel were now in lockstep on the Israeli military operation that the U.S. didn't initially back. "Nobody does it better than the good ol’ USA," he added.

Markets are concerned about Iran's frequent threats to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, just as the US heads into peak summer demand season.
